LaVonna Mae “Babe” Risk, 95, of Hanover, Indiana and formerly of Madison, Indiana and Canaan, Indiana, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.

She was born March 8, 1925, in Elwood, Indiana, to Golda and Day Risk, who soon moved to Canaan, where she lived the majority of her life. Nicknamed “Babe” as a toddler hanging around the local garage in Canaan with her father, she was an unconquerable and colorful force with a zest for life, music, dancing, cards, homemaking, sports, family and fast driving. She attended Canaan Elementary and graduated from Central High School in Madison. She married Howard Clifford Risk and they had three children, Richard, Larry and Shirley. She was Baptized in 1938 and was an 82-year member of Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church, holding several positions including serving as the first female trustee and until her death was the longest serving member of the congregation. She was a homemaker and farm partner who would milk cows and work in the fields and then rush home to prepare dinner before a competitive family game of croquet. Later she joined the Indiana Order of Eastern Star (OES) in 1954, was elevated to Indiana Worthy Grand Matron in 1972 and served a total of 66 years. She loved traveling the state for OES engagements including driving 72,000 miles alone in 1972 while visiting OES Chapters. She and her husband visited all 50 states, five continents and numerous countries. She enjoyed weekly card games with the Canaan Bid-Euchre club.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date once there is an opportunity to gather safely. Memorial contribution may be made to the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church in Canaan. Cards are available at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centres of Madison and Hanover. Online condolences, remembrances and memorials, www.morgan-nay.com.
