Lela Mae Hammons Mahoney, 93, of Madison, Indiana, died Monday, July 5, 2021, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.
She was born on Jan. 6, 1928, in Trimble County, Kentucky, to James Owen and Carrie Bruce King Hammons. She grew up in Trimble County and graduated high school there. She married Vernon “Darrell” Mahoney on July 9, 1949, in Carroll County, Kentucky, and they had two sons. She worked at the US Shoe Corporation for more than 40 years before retiring. She was member of the Calvary Wesleyan Church and enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with family.
Survivors include her husband of 72 years of Madison; her sons, Steve Mahoney and Keith Mahoney, both of Madison; a brother, Randall Hammons of Canaan, Indiana; and five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Owen Edward Hammons, on Nov. 26, 1996 and James Elmer Matthew Hammons, on Oct. 4, 1974; and four sisters, Della Evelyn Hammons Coffin, died July 29, 2001, Louise M. Hammons Leach, died May 22, 1991, Martha Marie Hammons McDole, died Sept. 9, 2009, and Thelma Laverne Hammons Crafton, died Feb. 1, 2018.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 9, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Moffett Cemetery in Milton, Kentucky. Visitation is 11 a.m. until time of services Friday at the funeral home.
