Mary Jo Goins, 87, of Madison, Indiana, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020, at the River Terrace Health Campus in Madison.
She was born July 7, 1933, in Switzerland County, Indiana, to Robert D. and Norine C. Clements Monroe. She moved to Jefferson County during her freshman year of high school, and was a 1951 graduate of the former Central High School. She was a homemaker after the birth of her son, but previously worked as secretary to Dr. M.W. Kemp, superintendent of Madison State Hospital, at Meese Inc. and the former Pearl Packing Company. She married Benjamin L. “Bennie” Goins on Feb. 21, 1954. She was a member of Madison First Baptist Church and bowled in the Women’s and Mixed Couples’ leagues for more than 50 years. She won the Rachel Abbott Achievement Award in bowling and was inducted into the women’s bowling Hall of Fame in 1997. She enjoyed crocheting, crewel, cross stich, reading and watching Judge Judy and TV mysteries.
Survivors include her son, Gregory W. Goins of Madison; a brother Bob Monroe of Madison; a dear friend, Debi Gaylord of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on March 27, 2016; and a nephew.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, on Madison’s Hilltop, with interment to follow in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. Visitation is 11 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
