Mary Ellen Scott Gray, 96, of Madison, Indiana and formerly of Lamb, Indiana, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.
She was born on Dec. 25, 1924, on Scott’s Ridge in Jefferson County, Indiana, to Harry D. and Ollie Mae Baker Scott. She married Garland Harris Gray on Feb. 14, 1942, in Louisville, and they raised two sons and a daughter. She worked as a switchboard operator for 10 years at Madison State Hospital, helped her husband on the farm, and baby sat many children. She was a member of the Union Baptist Church and the Madison Moose Lodge No. 765. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, needle point, dancing and attending country and bluegrass shows.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Stephan of Madison; and six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren, a long-time caregiver, Diana Luckett of Hanover and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years on Nov. 1, 1992; two sons, Jerry Wayne Gray on March 1, 2015 and Larry Lee Gray on Dec. 25, 2020; her sister, Jeanette Vasbinder on Feb. 21, 2016; two brothers, Morris Scott and Harold Dawson Scott, on Nov. 1, 1985; a granddaughter and other family.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Brooksburg Cemetery in Brooksburg, Indiana. Visitation is 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, and noon until the time of service Sunday at the funeral home.
