Sheila Elaine Guthrie Van Tassel, 70, of Madison, Indiana, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021, at her residence.
She was born on Oct. 28, 1951, in Madison, to William Jean and Mabel Goins Guthrie. She was a 1969 graduate of Southwestern High School in Hanover, Indiana, and earned her bachelor’s degree in 1973 from St. Joseph College, and her master’s degree from Indiana University Southeast. She married Bob Van Tassel on July 14, 1978, in Madison. She retired from teaching in 2021 from South Ripley School Corporation, in Versailles, Indiana, and had formerly taught in the Southwestern and Switzerland County, Indiana, school systems. She was a member of Madison First Baptist Church and enjoyed cooking, baking and her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years of Madison; one daughter Allison Koga, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan; two sons, Dustin Van Tassel of Endicott, New York and Sam Van Tassel of Jeffersonville, Indiana; two sisters, Connie Dalgleish of Madison and LeAnn Boyd of Madison; and three grandchildren and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be at noon on Monday, Nov. 29, at the First Baptist Church in Madison, with interment to follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Visitation is 10 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the church.
