Wendell Kenneth Cole, 90, of Madison, Indiana, died Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at his home in Madison.
He was born on March 18, 1931, in Switzerland County, Indiana, to Raymond E. and Dorothy M. Stoops Cole. He graduated from Vevay High School in 1949, where he played baseball and ran track. He tried out for the Pittsburgh Pirates just after high school. He was raised in Fairview, Indiana, and moved to Madison in 1956. He was inducted into the US Army on Feb. 29, 1952, at Fort Custer, Michigan. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 12, 1954, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, at the rate of Sergeant, receiving the Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He married Wanda M. McCoy on Jan. 19, 1979, at the First Christian Church in downtown Madison. He farmed early in life and also retired from Indiana-Kentucky Electric Corporation after 37 years as a maintenance supervisor. He was raised in the Fairview United Methodist Church and was a member of Rykers Ridge Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, being with family and playing golf.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years of Madison; his sons, Kenneth F. Cole of Madison and R. Brian Kidwell of Wilmore, Kentucky; his daughters, Michelle Tocco of Fishers, Indiana and Tiffany McGillan of Madison; his sister, Helen Kay Hyde Center of Madison; and 36 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a step granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at noon on Saturday, July 3, at Rykers Ridge Baptist Church near Madison. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Visitation is 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. A final salute with military honors will be conducted by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion.
