To the editor:

By now, most of you are probably aware that the Ohio Theatre sustained fire damage on June 28. Plain and simple, our brave local fire fighters saved the building. The volunteers quickly developed a safe strategy for extinguishing the fire and executed that plan with efficiency. They faced extreme heat and the added complication of multiple electric lines near the blaze, but never faltered. We are extremely grateful that the Ohio Theatre was the only structure to sustain damage. Thank you to the Madison Fire Department and first responders who protected the most beloved building on Main Street.

We are currently in the process of wrapping up fire and insurance investigations. All of us want answers, and we are doing our best to be patient and allow professionals to make their determinations. While we were fortunate that the fire was contained to the roof and rafters, we are now faced with water, smoke and mold damage. Be assured that we have hired top notch experts to address these issues and board members are completely focused on stabilizing the building.

To reference a famous quote, “The show must go on.” And, we have not made our final curtain call at the Ohio Theatre. We are fortunate to be surrounded by a fantastic group of supporters and volunteers who will move Heaven and Earth to restore the Ohio Theatre and exceed all expectations. This unfortunate setback is only a brief intermission. We will rise like a phoenix from the ashes and transform our toasted building into the finest showplace in the region. If you want to support the Ohio Theatre, like us on social media and send us your ideas for improving the theatre. Our e-mail address is Please call 812-701-5596 if you have questions or would like to learn more about how you can help us recover from the fire.

Thank you for making us feel like the most loved non-profit organization in Madison.
