To the editor:

I am writing to encourage Madison residents to plant large-stature trees in their yards.

Almost all of Madison’s ash trees are either dead or dying due to the Emerald Ash Borer infestation. Planting large stature trees is the only way to restore our shade canopy.

Big trees provide big benefits. We can’t replace the shade and other benefits that were provided by these ash trees by planting small ornamental trees. Trees such as Tulip Poplar, Oak, Hackberry, and Maple, are some of the many good replacements for ash trees.

Large Trees:

Reduce the need for air-conditioning

Shade paved surfaces

Improve air and water quality

Prevent water runoff and soil erosion

Enhance property values

When it comes to trees, size really does matter.
