Trimble County boys basketball capped off a strong showing with two wins to claim the championship of the Ray Zellar Classic at Whitefield Academy on Thursday.
The Raiders, who had defeated Francis Parker 56-36 in the opening round on Tuesday, knocked off Villa Madonna 71-55 in the semifinals on Wednesday then gutted out a 55-51 win over Leslie County in the championship game on Thursday.
Senior James Thomas Wilcoxson scored 20 points in the win over Villa Madonna and 21 against Leslie while Ethan Horn tallied 23 points in both games and Jerry Nevils had 10 points against Villa Madonna. All three were named to the all-tournament team and Horn was named Most Valuable Player of the tourney.
Trimble County, now 8-6 on the season and winners of four-straight, turns its attention to the All “A” Classic Eighth Region Tournament at Gallatin County starting on Monday. The Raiders will face host Gallatin County in the opening round.
Carroll girls Browning runner-up
Carroll County girls basketball dropped a close 57-54 decision to Scott in the championship game their own Pam Browning Classic in Carrollton on Thursday.
No details from the game were available.
On Wednesday, Carroll had defeated Lexington Christian 62-44 in the semifinals. Kaitlyn Hensley had 17 points to lead the Panthers while Madie Hicks and Reagan Matthews scored 14 points each and Courtney Strickland had 10.
Carroll, now 5-9 on the season, squares off against Williamstown in the opening round of the All “A” Classic Eighth Region Tournament at Gallatin County on Monday.
Rebels lost pair at Yoho
Southwestern girls basketball opened the Toby Yoho Classic at Eastern (Greene) with a pair of losses on Thursday.
The Rebels fell 42-28 to Jasper in the first game and 63-47 to host Eastern in the second game.
Ashley Fulton led Southwestern against Jasper with nine points while Claudia Oliver had eight points and Riley Scroggins scored five. Chloey Leach had 18 points against Eastern, Fulton scored 16 and Oliver and Scroggins scored six points each.
Southwestern, now 5-10 on the season, wrapped up play in the tournament on Friday with a pair of games. The Rebels will then host Austin on Thursday.
Trimble girls drop two
Trimble County’s girls dropped a pair of games in the Ray Zellar Classic at Whitefield Academy.
The Raiders lost 47-22 to host Whitefield in the opener on Wednesday and 69-52 to Sayre on Thursday.
No information for the Whitefield game was available. Against Sayre, Addison Edmondson had 15 points, Gracie Jent scored 13 and Jolie Wilcoxson had eight.
Trimble, now 5-7 on the season, wrapped up the tournament on Friday against an undisclosed opponent. The Raiders then open the All “A” Classic Eighth Region Tournament at Gallatin County on Wednesday.
Hanover falls to NYU
Hanover men’s basketball fell behind by 18 points at halftime and never recovered, losing 78-60 to New York University in the Roanoke College Tournament in Virginia on Thursday.
Max Greenamoyer had 13 points and five rebounds to lead Hanover while Coleman Sater scored 12 points and Ty Houston had 10.
Hanover, now 6-4 on the season, faced off against Methodist on Friday in the final game of the tournament. The Panthers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Mount St. Joseph.
Carroll drops 8th straight
Carroll County boys basketball suffered an 88-68 loss at Augusta on Thursday for its eighth straight defeat.

Carroll, now 1-11 on the season, squares off against Owen County in the opening round of the All “A” Classic Eighth Region Tournament at Gallatin County on Monday.
