Madison girls golf opened the 2022 season by competing in the Bloomington South Invitational Monday at Bloomington Country Club.
The Cubs had only three golfers available and were unable to post a team score. Senior Grace Bronkella led the squad with a 100, freshman Emmi Dowell carded a 109 and sophomore Lilly Fox shot a 116.
Top-ranked Carmel won the invite with a 301.
“We always seem to take our lumps in Bloomington, but I think it is good conditioning and a good atmosphere even if we aren’t very competitive there,” Madison coach Jake Shockley said. “We were a little short-handed today with still trying to get organized from the summer. Losing a player of Keara Eder’s caliber is always going to be a struggle for a school our size, but I think we can compete as long as everyone works together.
After losing Keara, we lost another starter to moving, and another returning starter is out with an injury.”
On Tuesday, Madison’s full squad joined Shawe in a tri-meet at St. Annes Golf Course near North Vernon. Host Jennings County won the match with a 203, Madison had a 227 and Shawe shot a 238 in its season opener. Bronkella and Dowell led Madison with a pair of 48s while Fox carded a 65, Riley Poling shot a 66 and Aleigh Wilson a non-scoring 70.
“Overall, we have a very young team right now. Grace and Lilly are the only two with varsity experience under their belts,” Shockley said “I like the squad we put out there today. They are a good group of kids, and I think we could show some significant improvement by the end of the year.”
Kira Wells shot a 45 to pace Shawe while Bailey Kilgore had a 59, Yolett Perez a 64 and Cassidy Nott a 70.
“Tonight was not our best effort but we were a player short and one of the girls was playing her first match ever,” Shawe coach David Hertz said. “I thought Kira’s play was the one bright spot. She had a chip-in birdie and if she doesn’t hit into the water twice, her score is likely closer to 40. The biggest takeaway is that it’s early, the scores will come down over time and we should be at full strength on Friday.”
Jennings County’s Sophia Curry was the low-medalist with a 38 and Alexis Carson shot a 46 for the Panthers.
Madison returned to action on Wednesday when it competed in the Seymour Invitational at Shadowood Golf Course and competes in the Greensburg Invitational at North Branch on Saturday.
Shawe will travel to Switzerland County to compete at Belterra on Thursday and then will square off against Southwestern and Switzerland at Butler Falls Golf Course in Hanover on Friday.
