Madison’s Van Skinner and Switzerland County’s Peyton Richards and Gabe Rose each claimed championships in the 14th annual Cub Classic Wrestling Tournament at Madison on Thursday.
Skinner picked up the win at 182 pounds with a forfeit and two falls while Richards also claimed a forfeit and two falls while winning at 120 pounds and Rose picked up three wins by fall to win at 138 pounds.
As a team, Madison placed fifth with 160 points and Switzerland County was sixth with 135. Hamilton Heights won the team title with 272.5 points with East Central second with 261 and Heritage Hills third with 241.
After getting a forfeit over Paoli in his quarterfinal match, Skinner pinned Brendin Kolter of East Central in 2:59 in the semifinals and Jimmy Lacey of Hamilton Heights in 1:15 in the finals to claim the title.
Richards followed a similar path to the win at 120, getting a forfeit over Paoli in the quarterfinals, a fall over Holden McCarthy of Washington in 1:25 in the semifinals and a fall over Dalton Pledger of Heritage Hills in 3:56 in the finals.
Rose won all three of his matches at 138 by fall. After getting a bye in the first round, Rose pinned Brady Merk of East Central in 1:41, Tyson Miller of East Central in 1:47 and Alex Furst of Hamilton Heights in 2:37.
Two Madison Cubs, Eli Stewart and Tazman Shipley, finished third in the event.
Stewart (120 pounds) picked up a fall over Brayden Proctor of East Central in 2:57 in the opening round but was then pinned by Pledger in 4:00 in the semifinals. Stewart regrouped to pin Hamilton Heights’ Gavin Archer in 1:14 in the consolations semifinals then pinned Procter again, this time in 1:33, in the third-place match.
Shipley (132) received a bye in the opening round then scored a 16-6 major decision over Blake Duttlinger of Heritage Hills in the quarterfinals. After suffering a loss by an 11-2 major decision to Simon Kuhn of Hamilton Heights in the semifinals, Shipley pinned Switzerland’s Chazz Hartley in 3:00 in the consolation semifinals and pinned Washington’s Righley Purdue in 4:17 in the third-place match.
Madison’s Danny Mack (126), Zane Skinner (152), Cameron Wall (160), Ayden Waggoner (170) and Taytem Anderson (195) each placed fourth while Trenton Bivens (138) placed fifth, Travon Resendiz (220) was sixth and Kieran Lock (126) and Davon Resendiz (285) each placed seventh.
Switzerland County’s Ethan Jones (145) placed fourth, Aiden Covington (126), Hartley (132), Gabe Jackson (152) each placed fifth, Darian Graham (170) and Kolvin Beck (182) each placed sixth, Dakota Fields (113) was seventh and Keaton Mosley (160) placed eighth.
Both Madison and Switzerland County return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7 when they compete in the Nick Shadday Invitational at Madison. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.
