Trimble (8-7, 4-3) and Gallatin (5-7, 2-2) combined to make 25 three point shots in the opening round of the 8th Region All “A” Classic at Gallatin County on Monday night as Gallatin held off Trimble for a 90-82 win.
Trimble led after the first quarter 18-15, but Gallatin pulled out to a seven-point lead after five made threes, for a halftime score of 39-32.
Trimble opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run in the first 2:30 to cut Gallatin's lead to one point, 42-41. The teams traded runs during the second half with Gallatin making a three point shot anytime they needed one to stall any Trimble comeback attempts.
Down 61-53 to start the fourth quarter, Trimble pulled to within two points, 64-62. The Raiders had the ball with a chance to tie the score when Ethan Horn was called for a charge in the middle of the lane with 5:53 on the clock. After the play, Horn picked up a technical foul and coach Brent Welty also picked up a technical foul when discussing Horn’s fouls. Gallatin’s Kellen Dossett made three of the four free throws, pushing the lead to five. Trimble pulled to within four on a three-point basket by Coltin Humphreys, but two three-point baskets by Gallatin’s Kasen Baker pushed the lead out to 10. Trimble made one more run to get the lead back to four points. A missed shot by Trimble and yet another three point basket by Gallatin put the lead back to 10 points.
Gallatin was 6-8 from the free throw line to seal the win in the last minute.
Welty said his team played really hard and battled the entire night. The team is in a stretch of 11 road games with a 4-3 record in the games played so far.
“We know we are getting everyone on their home floor and being on the road is tiring, but we have another week of being road warriors,” Welty said.
J.T Wilcoxson scored 27 points and pulled in 12 rebounds. Horn scored 21 points and had nine rebounds. Trimble had two others scoring in double figures as Brayden Wilson was five of nine from the three point line for 15 points and Coltin Humphreys scored 11 points. Ethan Keller scored six points and Jerry Nevils scored two points.
Gallatin put four players in double figures with Dossett leading with 28 points, Matthew Griffin scored 23 points, Andrew Brinker scored 20 points and Kasen Baker added 16 points.
Trimble wins Ray Zeller Christmas Tournament
Trimble County defeated Francis Parker, 56-36, Villa Madonna, 71-55 and Leslie County 55-51 to win the tournament hosted by Whitefield Academy last week.
Ethan Horn was named the MVP and J. T. Wilcoxson and Jerry Nevils joined him on the all-tournament team.
In the 20-point win against Francis Parker, Wilcoxson scored 22 points and had 15 rebounds and Horn scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds.
Brayden Wilson scored six points, Coltin Humphreys had five points, Charlie Liter scored four points with Beau Bradley and Zach Rice each adding two points.
In the win over Villa Madonna, Horn scored 23 points and had five rebounds, Wilcoxson scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds and Nevils scored 10 points and had 17 rebounds. Wilson added six points, Bradley scored four points, Ethan Keller scored three points, Liter and Humphreys scoring two points apiece and Marcos Rodriguez scored one point.
In the championship win over Leslie County, the Raiders were led by Horn's 23 points and eight rebounds and Wilcoxson with 21 points and had 15 rebounds. Wilson scored seven points with Keller scoring three points and Humphreys adding a point. Nevils had five rebounds.
Trimble continues its road show with 31st District games on Jan. 10 at Henry County, Jan. 13 at Owen County, Jan. 16 at Carroll County and Jan. 18 at Dayton.
